What to expect from a Barre Class


Barre classes are very popular these days although this is one fitness trend that is here to stay. Barre studios are popping up in every major city across the globe, along with a variety of DVDs you can do at home. While all Barre workouts differ slightly in structure, most methods incorporate exercises done at the Barre combined with elements of Ballet, Pilates, and Yoga. Barre exercises mainly rely upon one’s body weight for resistance, and the moves challenge your core stability and balance. Barre workouts are designed to help an individual achieve a strong, sleek, and streamlined body.

While some Barre workouts will contain a cardio component, not all programs will elevate your heart rate or burn a ton of calories—they are more about developing muscle tone. If you’re mostly interested in weight loss, combine your Barre workouts with additional cardio sessions and a healthy diet. The Loft has a focus on functional fitness – developing strength, correct alignment, placement & posture. We work with each individual to help gain a deeper understanding of your own body and how to move efficiently. The classes are very beneficial for those who do other dance styles such as Ballet, Contemporary or Jazz, aiding your technique development.

The Loft Dance Studio has two Barre classes to choose from –

Ballet Barre 

Ballet Barre combines simple ballet exercises, core strength work and dance specific stretching.  The class is low impact in nature with higher intensity intervals of strength training followed by deep stretching. No ballet or dance training required. Ballet Barre is a general fitness class with upbeat music and designed to tone and stretch the entire body.

Yoga Barre

Yoga Barre combines a flowing yoga style with barre conditioning exercises and basic contemporary dance movements to tone your body at the barre and on the mat. An invigorating class that combines breath, awareness and ease of movement. No dance experience required.


What do I wear? Normal fitness gear is most suitable; leggings, tanks etc…classes can be done in bare feet or bring along ‘grip socks’ if you have them. Classes are for 1 hour duration. Our Barre classes are considered multi-level and are appropriate for a variety of fitness levels and body sizes.  Wherever you plan to try Barre workouts learn the credentials and dance experience of the teacher to ensure a safe, effective and appropriate workout for you.

You don’t have to be a dancer to do Barre classes! However, you will begin to stand taller and move with ease. There is no prior dance experience required to benefit from a barre program. You should feel more strong, flexible and coordinated and more like a dancer with every class!
